What Makes the VS1 Vacuum Circuit Breaker a Popular Choice in Medium Voltage Systems?

The VS1 vacuum circuit breaker is one of the most widely used medium-voltage breakers in today’s power distribution networks. Designed for indoor switchgear applications, the VS1 series (also known as ZN63A-12) is built to handle voltages from 12kV to 24kV, with rated currents ranging from 630A to 3150A. Its compact structure, high reliability, and low maintenance requirements make it a preferred solution for utilities, industrial plants, data centers, and renewable energy stations.

One of the biggest advantages of the VS1 VCB is its vacuum interrupter technology. Unlike SF₆ gas or oil-type breakers, vacuum interruption eliminates arc quenching gas emissions and prevents environmental leakage issues. This significantly increases operational safety and lifespan, especially under frequent switching conditions such as motor control, capacitor banks, and transformer protection.

The VS1 breaker is also known for its modular and withdrawable design. It can be installed in metal-clad switchgear (KYN28-12, XGN, etc.) and easily removed for inspection without shutting down the entire system. This feature reduces downtime and ensures continuous operation in industrial environments where power interruption cannot be tolerated.

Other notable strengths include:

  • High mechanical endurance (over 30,000 operations)

  • Strong short-circuit breaking capability (up to 31.5kA)

  • Spring or permanent-magnet operating mechanism options

  • Compatibility with IEC 62271-100 and GB1984 standards

  • Suitable for smart grid upgrades with digital relay interface

Because of its long service life and efficient performance, the VS1 has become a standard breaker type for medium-voltage distribution in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa. EPC contractors also favor the model because it supports OEM branding and customized specifications.
